When the elderly choose a shower chair based on their own conditions and the size of the bathroom, they still need to pay attention to the following points:
Movable Space
It is crucial to check the size of the bathroom and the condition of the entrance door to ensure there is sufficient space for movement. Insufficient movable space may lead to falls.
Physical Condition
Select a shower chair according to the user's build and physical condition. Matching the chair to the user's physical state can reduce physical strain and prevent the risk of falls, which is essential for promoting self-care ability.
Color
The psychological and physiological characteristics of the elderly determine their preference for specific colors. They tend to favor soft and bright colors, such as plain gray, calm blue, and simple white, while avoiding vivid colors with strong visual impact.
Appearance
As people age, their physical coordination declines. Therefore, the shower chair should adopt shapes with no sharp corners and smooth contours to reduce the risk of bumps and scratches, and provide a sense of security for the elderly psychologically.
Backrest
A well-designed backrest ensures the user does not easily feel tired even when sitting for a long time. A lower backrest prevents the raised part of the spine from touching the backrest, which is particularly suitable for elderly users with a hunchback.
Seat Height
The ideal seat height should allow the thighs to remain horizontal, the calves to be vertical, and both feet to rest flat on the ground.
The seat should not be too high. If it is, the calves will be suspended, and the front edge of the seat will press against the thighs, causing discomfort to the user. Prolonged sitting in this position may block blood circulation, leading to numbness and swelling of the calves.
The seat should not be too low either. For users with long legs, a low seat will cause the pelvis to tilt backward and straighten the normal lumbar curve, resulting in waist soreness and discomfort.
According to ergonomic principles, the seat height is generally between 400mm and 440mm.
